蓋付きの漆椀の特徴として、木の素材を活かし熱による膨張で熱を逃がさず、冷ましにくくするという性質のものだが、同時に蓋が空かないという事件もしばしば。日本では、子供のころにはじめて学ぶテーブルマナーに蓋の開け方というものを最初に学んだ方も多いのでは。

これは、この空かなくなることの多い事を、"鍵でもついているのでは？"というジョークにしたもの。ショップでは、一緒に鍵を箸置きにして展示。

 

Lock and Key Lacquer Bowl

Traditional lacquer bowls for serving miso and other soups usually come with a lid. When the lid is placed over the bowl filled with hot soup, the steam makes the wood expand and creates a heat-saving seal. It is an ingenious design, but at times the seal can become so strong that the lid seems impossible to remove-just as if it has been locked. This playful design pokes fun at such stubborn lids. The bowls are displayed in stores with a key that doubles as a chopstick rest.
